The Versa VRS-8 Road shifter is an STI-style (Shimano Total Integration) shifter that integrates shifting and braking into a single lever that is mounted onto drop-style road handlebars. The shifter uses independent up/down shifters for smooth precise shifting at any time - while pedaling coasting, or even at a complete stop. The Versa lever set works exclusively with the Shimano Alfine 8 and Nexus 8 internal gear hubs, providing a wide range of gearing from a compact internal hub.

We couldn't find anyone who's tried this combination, but I have been told that Shimano hubs are a different pull that Sturmey Archer, so I'm going to say no in this one.

I asked this question originally, and also submitted the same to the manufacturer. Some time after getting the response here I received a different response back from manufacturer:
The shifter cable can not be routed under the bar tape. Only brake cable can be routed under the bar tape.
I think that the manufacturer's response is correct, likely the shifter cable must be routed as shown in http://www.ecovelo.info/images/versa-lever-2.jpg

Shimano reccomends that you use drop-bar levers without a travel agent for those brakes for proper pull. Many people find that using a travel agent improves braking, but it is not reccomended by Shimano and may void any warranty.

Haven't done a whole lot of riding with these yet, but so far they work just fine and they seem to be well made. This was the only option for drop bars with an alfine 8 speed hub. Shifting is seemless. I already like them better than my old campy shift levers on the downtube. Originally wish I could have gotten them with silver brake levers, but once I saw them installed on my bike, the all black looks great.

Works quite well for me. As the other reviewer said, I toohad this as the only option for drop bars with an alfine 8 speed hub. Overall they shift nice and I thought the quality was decent.
