A short or mid-cage derailleur is used for less chain wrap and best for non-full suspension based bikes. So with smaller large to large gearing you can get away with a short cage derailleur because it doesn't need to take up so much slack. With larger rings and a larger difference in low to high gearing the cage of the rear derailleur needs to be longer to take up the extra slack in the chain that is needed to accommodate that variation. A lot of times the tech sheets for the crank / cassette that you are buying will suggest one or the other. Keep in mind that full suspension bikes need even more variation especially on a Sram derailleur.

Currently using the short cage (actually short, not shimano xt/xtr short, like sram short) on a 1x9 hardtail (11-32 rear with 32 up front) with the Mode Converter. If its good enough for DH, it will be good enough on the regular trails. The skid plate is absolutely massive and will definitely outlast my dropouts. It weighs just a little more than XTs but look 10 times better. Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a true short cage from shimano.
