Chainline is the position of the cogs or chainrings relative to the center line of the bike. Most road bikes that use rim brakes and higher end disc bikes (105, Ultegra and Dura Ace) that came with 10-speed parts should have a 43.5mm chainline which is measured from the center of the seat tube to the middle of the crank.
This Shimano 105 front derailleur will work best when used with a crank that gives you a 43.5mm chainline. Cranks with a wider or narrower chainline might experience rubbing or slow shifting in certain gear combinations.
