The Open bar is a do everything bar with a sick attitude. Ride it to cruise, commute, on the local trails, wherever you like. It's a comfortable handlebar, the swept back position makes it easy on the hands and provides a nice upright riding position. The 40mm rise version provides a bar that is higher for even more upright riding (or can be turned upside down to be a little more horizontal).
Long grip area provides ample room for grips, shifters, brake levers, and accessories. The 4130 CroMoly steel provides the strength, comfort, and durability that Surly is known for.

anwered by: a guest I have the nitto version of these bars and I run road levers. They're clamped on the curve but thats okay because they're multiposition bars.

I have the zero rise version of this bar on my gravel bike. 12-speed shifter and MT5 brake levers are mounted as far forward as I can get them, with XL chunky ESI grips. This gives a lot of room to move my hands around. I can also grab the curves on long climbs.
I like the moderate width, the forward sweep on the curves, and the rear sweep for riding upright and steep climbs.
I wish it was aluminum with 30.8 clamp, but the thin walled steel is still pretty light, and nice and springy. If it's available and you like the curve, don't worry that it's steel. The bar plugs need a few wraps of tape because the inside diameter is larger.
I switched from an FSA Metropolitan. The Open is a better bar for gravel, at least for my wide shoulders and long arms.
Summed up: Perfect handlebar for my gravel bike (6'3", XL frame)
Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

super comfy - honestly really comfy during climbs. running this on a priority classic 3 speed bike and it's got a nice look with the 40mm rise and is real comfortable while riding.
I'm so glad I went with these over the Jones Bars. Super comfortable and the rise is spot on. Also the cheapest price I found on the web and free shipping. They are just really great bars for the way I ride.
