A few years ago "Fat Biking" meant 3 inch tires on 45mm rims. Now 4 inch tires on 82mm rims are standard and with the launch of Surly's Moonlander 4.7 inch tires on 100mm rims, chains rub the tires like the cast of the "Jersey Shore" on a 19 year old blonde at the club. This has been an issue with traditional crank designs that were intended for lesser tires. The Surly MWOD (Mr Whrily Offset Double) chainrings move the inner ring to the outer position and the middle chainring to the outer position.
The MWOD chainrings give you enough clearance to run the Big Fat Larry tire on a Rolling Darrell (or other 82mm rims) on a Pugsley or Salsa Mukluk (
the Mukluk may run into some frame rub issues)
Q: Will the Pugsley specific cranks work on a Moonlander?
A: No, the Pugsley is designed around a 17.5mm lateral offset while the Moonlander uses a 28mm offset. To make this adjustment Surly offers a
Moonlander Specific Spindle.
