aharmonUntil I got the Ergon Cleat Fitting Tool I assumed that the markings on the bottom of my too-expensive shoes might actually relate to the way the cleat should be installed - and suffered the knee pain to prove it. Tweak, tweak, tweak, but never got it right. Granted, there's no magic position that will suit every rider, so you will still have to adjust to suit your body, but at least you will have a replicable starting point, and will know for sure what and how much changes with each adjustment.
And whether you are really toed in or out. Lining up the cleat with the marks on the sole left my feet in anything but a neutral position. Now I have a reliable reference.
