The Park Tool BTS-1 is a precision tool system which provides a piloted means of tapping the threads in the bottom bracket shell of a frame. After tapping, the taps act as guides to keep the included facing cutter perfectly square with the axis of the bottom bracket for cleanup of the faces of the bottom bracket shell. The Park Tool BTS-1 includes English taps, 1.370" x 24 TPI right hand thread for the adjustable cup, and 1.370" x 24 TPI left hand thread for the fixed cup. Italian thread taps, 36mm x 24 TPI right hand thread (Park Tool Part #693), for the adjustable and fixed cups are available as accessories.

The Park BTS-1 is one of the most expensive bike tools on the market and can ruin the most expensive frame out there without blinking an eye.
When used properly this tool will make the shell of the bottom bracket square so that outboard bearing bottom brackets such as Shimano's HollowTech II and Campagnolo's Ultra Torque will work properly. By not having the face of the bottom bracket shell square uneven load is placed on the bearing resulting in premature bearing wear, not something you want to have happen on that new $300 ceramic bottom bracket.
The Park BTS-1 also chases the threads of English bottom brackets (optional Italian taps are available) which is great for removing excess paint from the threads. We also use it on older frames that get rusty or if the bottom bracket get contaminated with sand.
To prolong cutting head life we always use a cutting fluid such as Park's CF-2
