FKDIIIThis stuff is probably like beer, everyone has a preference. I live in a dry climate so this is predicated on not dealing with rain and mud etc. I've tried most everything, I think. Stuff just works best for me. The routine over the years is get it on, run the chain backwards holding a cloth around the whole thing until you get as much off it as you can. depending on how dirty or how smooth the rollers feel, do it again. Probably the trick is apply at least the day before, or like i do with my tasty new carbon bike, after the ride and LET IT DRY. doing it like that, i can use a brush to get the dust off before reapplying, it's that dry. With the price of cassettes, chains and chainrings these days, doing it this way, the chain goes six months and the rest maybe two years.
On the road bike, new, (way too expensive stuff) I lube EVERY time and have a tad over 2000 miles on a hollow pin DuraAce chain (not known for it's longevity) and it's only to the 75% mark on the Rohloff checker.

A GuestI have used this chain lube for several years and find it to be outstanding. It cleans and lubes the chain, is very quick and easy to use. I also got a great deal on it at Tree Fort bikes with their price matching feature.
I am not sure about using it for other purposes, but I just put a drop on each linkage of the chain and run it through a rag or paper towel to remove the grit and grime and lube the chain.
