Pavement Disc Rear Wheel 700c Alfine 8 / Velocity Dyad Reflective
The good folks at Handspun choose to lace a Shimano Alfine internally geared 8 speed hub to Velocity's Dyad rim. The Dyad rim is strong, built for wider tires, and reflective, good for commuting or touring. The hub featured in this wheel is Shimano''s Alfine SGS501 32h centerlock disk brake hub. Alfine 8-speed hub gear range: 1st gear = 0.527, 2nd gear = 0.644, 3rd gear = 0.748, 4th gear = 0.851, 5th gear = 1.00 (direct drive), 6th gear = 1.223, 7th gear = 1.419, 8th gear = 1.615

Does the wheel come with shifter? Also does it come with cog? If not what size is reccom
A.
anwered by: canteau
The wheel does not come with the shifter, small parts kit or cog. Any of the Shimano Nexus or Alfine cogs will work. 16t or 18t are most common.

Which inexpensive frames could this be used on (w/disc brakes)?
A.
anwered by: canteau
The Shimano Alfine hub will work on almost any standard 135mm spaced frame. You will need to get the small parts kit that is designed for either horizontal or vertical drop outs.
The particular wheel is 700c so you would need a disc cross frame like the Soma Double Cross DC or a 29er like the Surly Karate Monkey.

A GuestI put this on my wife's city bike (On-One Pompetamine) and it's been great! Very easy to set up and shifts very nicely. Makes me want to get an Alfine 11 for my bike... The Reflective Rim it very cool, too. Adds to commuting safety. There's something to be said about the cleanliness of a singlespeed (on internally geared hub) driveline. Easy to maintain and runs very quietly. She pulls the kids and fresh produce around in a trailer and this hub has never baulked at the load.

jr50kidI put this wheel/hub combo on a new commuter that I built up this fall. It has fast become my go to bike.
I love the smooth, quiet, instantaneous shifts. Sure, the gaps are bigger than on my 10 speed rear cassette, but you can't shift to any gear you like sitting at a stop light with the derailleur equipped bike either. Overall gear range is excellent.
Have I mentioned this hub is quiet? There is no sound coming from the drivetrain while riding down the trail. Only the sound of your own breathing...
Upshifts are smooth, silent and instant. Downshifts are the same, but you cannot be hammering, it doesn't downshift under load. Once you learn to let off a split second for it to downshift, all is well with the world.
Maintenance free aspect is great and not having my cassette packed in with ice will be priceless.
Slight weight gain is worth it.
