The XC 28 has simple, reliable Rock Shox dependability and rim brake compatibility.
The XC 28 comes with Rock Shox's modern updates too, with TurnKey lockout that allows the fork to absorb unexpected big hits even when locked out, to prevent damage to the fork or interrupting your rhythm. Simple coil springs are adjustable for pre-load, with optional light or extra firm spring rates available. External rebound adjustment means one-time setting for your ride weight so the fork doesn''t start to stack up on washboard bumps.
The 4130 chrome steel 28mm upper tubes are mated to a 6061 aluminum crown, to keep a reasonable weight. Magnesium lowers accept rim or disc brakes.

Running at a lower pressure to get more sag (and therefore less travel) is not advised because it runs the risk of bottoming out, and won't give optimal fork performance. As for the geometry, the Axle-to-crown length is 474mm. I wouldn't recommend using it on a '96 Marin if this fork differs from from the original ATC length by more than 10mm or so.

We won't tell you to get rid of your trusty Klein, but be warned that doing a wheel, fork, and brake upgrade will likely put you halfway towards a decent new bike.

We wouldn't recommend it, the difference in travel going from a 60mm fork to a 100mm fork can cause too much stress on the headtube of your bike, resulting in frame failure. Your best option may be to move to a rigid fork that is closer in height to what you have now.
