Will this work well with a short cage RD set up originally for a 46/36/24 and 12-28 MTB?

It depends on the capacity of the rear derailleur. You might need to go to one that has a mid or long cage.

It will but you will need to use a cassette spacer to run a 7 speed cassette on a 8/9/10 speed free hub body.

Note that this only fits 7-speed hubs. An 8/9/10 will require a spacer. I love that all the sprockets are individual and can be disassembled. I’m a gear nerd and used this to make my own custom gearing by selecting certain sprockets and combining this with another cassette.

I installed this cassette on my new Mavic Open Sport wheel. It did indeed require a spacer to get the fit just right. I used bottom bracket spacers from my LBS and everything went fine. This cassette works the way it should but I have mixed feelings. The other day at the LBS I was able to compare it to a similarly priced Shimano unit and the Shimano just looked, well, higher quality. Not sure if it matters, but the SRAM lost the beauty contest.
