AnalogDogWe'll see just how durable this guy is. Here's the thing. Sure you could put a Phil Wood in, and if you're doing an unsupported world tour, you probably should. But for the rest of us, this guy does the job at a fraction of the cost of a Phil Wood, and ANY bike shop is going to be able to pull this one, and have a replacement. And there is NOTHING WRONG with square taper. All the drives that have come out since are proprietary, more problematic, more finicky, and a solution to a problem that DIDNT EXIST.

cyclingmikeThe Shimano UN55 is reliable, cost effective, and easy to replace. The UN55 cartridge bearing is readily available in a myriad of sizes.
My original bottom bracket bearing was a different manufacture and it failed sooner than it should. Nothing worst than a hitch at 12 o'clock or a annoying squeak.

A GuestUsed it in a 1991 Trek 700 and loved the sealed cartridge arrangement. Even if water or dirt finds their way into the BB housing, the bearings are not affected. Installation also is very easy - no chance to tighten it up too much, as you only have to install with the correct torque and it is all set - no adjustments needed.

A GuestThe un-55 comes in a variety of sizes to suit different applications. I have used several to upgrade/restore older bikes and keep the square taper cranks.

rfg...@be...h.netReplaced on Raleigh Olympian with 130mm traditional axle. The 127.5mm worked like a charm. No clearance issues.
Glad I made the switch. The bike was a garage sale special and crank could not be tightened completely. So there was a little play in the bottom bracket axle.
Shimano sealed bottom bracket to the rescue.
The only issue, though minor, was the rivet from the cable guide on the bottom of the bb that had to be filed down to accommodate the new hub.
Bike rides better now with the sealed hub.

echuntBasic bottom bracket used to replace an older non-sealed unit on a vintage bike. I didn't much like the plastic non drive side bushing, but it seems to work well. I put 2k miles on it so far and no issues. The bike is a gravel grinder and used on some pretty muddy trails; the sealed bearings cut down on maintenance issues.
