What this probably referring to is that it is 8 speed indexed, but will work as a 9 speed shifter in it's friction mode. Thanks!

There seems to be some confusion between the title, description and the other asked question. Sun Race makes an SL M96 RF which is friction shifting, and an SL M96 R8 which is indexed for 8 speed. Which one is this?

The unlike the Shimano and Suntour thumb shifters in the past that could be switched between indexed and friction, the rear shifter on the Sun Race M96 shifter is indexed only.
