I think the Shimano hubs are way ugly. There is some evidence that they may be more reliable, but Sturmey Archer Customer service here in the US is incredible. They really stand by their product with advice, spare parts and warranty service. If you want to spend the extra money you might consider SRAM rather than Shimano. (that gives you an extra gear,too)

In my experience the Shimano hubs are slightly more reliable and have better customer support than Sturmey Archer hubs.
That being said, the Sturmey Archer hubs are usually significantly more affordable and still perform very nicely.

I bought this for a track frame conversion. I loved the idea to combine a nice handling track frame with enough gears to get me up the hills. Looks great, works great, and I actually enjoy the ratcheting sound of the pawls.
Not sure if mine is a fluke, but I've had my share of issues :-(
